The big legal publishing story this week is the demise of the UK?s legal publishing group Incisive.

Ok it isn?t exactly a demise but it certainly is a big step back as APAX (the investment vehicle that allowed them to purchase the American Lawyer Group) take contol of the business in the US and RBS get control in the UK.

LLN/eu thinks it is somewhat of a shame that this short lived empire was built on such a mountain of debt.

Incisive, in our opinion, were actually doing something useful in the States. Some complained that they were bringing down the tone of legal reporting and legal news in the US, we believe the industry needed a shake up in this regard and the quality of reporting what?s going on in the US legal industry has improved since they took over the group. At least now we don?t start drifting off to sleep as soon as we open an American lawyer media newspaper, magazine or website.

APAX have started well by retaining the existing management team in the US. We presume it?ll be around Christmas and end of year figures when we?ll see if they intend to do a major rehaul of management and the company. If enough money isn?t being made we may well see other players snapping up various units. Will Lexis or West see this as a cheap entry into the legal news market. It wouldn?t surprise us if Martindale Hubbell saw the news element as a way of tying clients into their social networking business plan.

In the UK .. all we can say is that we hope that RBS let Legal Week and the conference businesses get on with it. We certainly wouldn?t feel confident taking advice from RBS.

Whilst on the subject of the American Lawyer?. Do take a moment to look at our 2nd LLN story. The American Lawyer magazine has published a survey of US law libraries which investigates the way in which the gklobal slowdown has affected biudgets and the way KM?s & Librarians are managing the supply of information to their firms on ever dcreasing budgets.

You?ll all know the severity of the cuts from personal experience.. this is how the American lawyer sums it up.

Last year only 9 percent of respondents said their budgets had shrunk. This year it was a whopping 46 percent. Staff reductions have also become the norm, with 57 percent of firms paring their library payroll, up from 18 percent in 2008.

In excited utterances this week Joy features a piece by Tom Baldwin at US firm Reed Smith entitled KM Implementation at Reed Smith.

She also writes in her piece Has ?IT? Killed ?KM?? ??I?ve commented in the past about how I think that Knowledge Management (KM) has become so overwhelmed with technology products that the individuals in KM have become ?tech support? rather than knowledge managers. Yesterday, I read two different articles that reinforced my conception of what I think is a major flaw in the idea of ?Knowledge Management? within law firms.

Finally take a look at our House of Butter blog post for Lexis?s latest faux pas.

http://www

For once they had a chance to illustrate to their client base that they were a little smarter than West after West?s plainly stupid ?who needs law librarians ?email. But instead Lexis has managed to make a very poor choice on one of their rewards programme prizes. Yes.. you too can win the Asian girls calendar. Just what every legal library manager and KM needs.

Best wishes Sean & Joy
