The Managing Editor performs high-level editorial duties to support the Journals department (ie: Publisher, Editor-in-Chief and/or Editorial Director) and is responsible for coordinating the editing and production processes of the journal, including overseeing the accuracy of content and its overall look and tone. This position also supports the market positioning of a journal, its website, e newsletter, and social media.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•Editorial
oAssist with the development of the annual editorial calendar.
oConsistently provide readers with interesting, in-depth coverage of issues and trends in the publication’s market by acquisitioning, editing and/or writing original content and overseeing design/redesign of the print publication and related branded products, such as supplements, directories, and special projects.
oEnsure content is of the highest quality and uphold journalistic standards of editorial integrity while meeting all editorial deadlines.
oEdit and communicate complex clinical information for a sophisticated audience.
oWork with Editor(s)-in-Chief and editorial staff to manage article submissions, make recommendations for accept/reject of submissions.
oOversee proofreading and approval of article PDFs for print and online formats throughout the production cycle.
oDirect and supervise freelancers in assigned writing and editing projects.
oOversee the publication’s online and social media presence, including developing annual short- and long-range goals for each, ie: frequency of inclusion of videos, podcasts, online/digital-only content, etc.
oWork with Editor(s)-in-Chief/Publisher to develop and coordinate the publication’s social media strategy (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.), including annual short- and long-range goals for each, ie: frequency of posting/tweeting such as several times per day, daily, weekly, biweekly, etc.
oAcquisition and sometimes write relevant articles and columns in accordance with the monthly production schedule.
oManage the annual editorial calendar and issue lineups, working with the Publisher, Editor(s)-in-Chief and editorial staff to develop ideas for the print and online versions and related branded products.
oWork with designers, editors, and/or clinical editors to develop layouts and art ideas that are attractive and clinically accurate for each issue.
oWork with Publisher and Editor(s)-in-Chief to implement strategy and product development, ensuring that the journal and its ancillary products meet the needs of our readers and business.
oWork independently, taking initiative and ownership of journal tasks, and requiring minimal supervision.
•Communication
oEstablish regular, face-to-face contact with Publisher and/or Editor(s)-in-Chief, and editorial staff, meeting weekly or biweekly to discuss editorial schedule and prioritize workload as necessary.
oEstablish regular email/phone communication and build professional rapport with Editorial Board members, outside Editor(s)-in-Chief, industry thought leaders, regular columnists and authors.
oRespond to calls and emails from outside sources, involving Publisher and Editor(s)-in-Chief when needed.
oWork interdepartmentally with advertising, marketing, production, design, etc., routing permissions, financial, online, ad sales, and other requests, as appropriate.
•Marketing and Circulation
oEstablish a positive presence in the publication’s market and represent the organization in a knowledgeable, professional manner, networking to maintain and strengthen publication’s reputation.
oWork with Publisher, Editor(s)-in-Chief/Editorial Director to support marketing’s development of product messaging and positioning for journal, its website, enewsletter, social media, and iPad app.
oContribute to market research strategy and readership/member surveys.
o Meet with marketing manager quarterly to understand circulation mix of paid, control, member, and institutional subscribers.
•Advertising Sales
oWork with Publisher, Editor(s)-in-Chief, and sales directors and reps to create strategy that enhances revenue and readership.
oReview Kantar Reports and BPA Statements twice annually with Publisher, Editor(s)-in-Chief, and sales Directors and reps to refine and craft sales strategy and positioning against competition.
oParticipate in special project costing and idea generation to increase revenue opportunities.
oContribute to SWOT analyses annually, as requested by Publisher and advertising sales.
•Production
oMonitor editorial workflow in accordance with production schedule.
oMonitor page usage reports to stay within annual page budgets.
oWork with production managers to schedule editorial supplements and special projects for on-time delivery.
oReview ad/edit ratio and folio size to help Publisher ensure expenses are in line with budget.
•New Product Development
oSubmit ideas with descriptions for analysis and testing to Editorial Director or Publisher.
oAssist in researching new product ideas, as assigned.
•Conference attendance
oAttend a minimum of 2 professional conferences annually and maximize time at each.
?Review exhibits and competition on floor.
?May assist editorial staff by meeting with key opinion leaders to acquisition articles and/or conduct article interviews in accordance with editorial calendar.
?Attend Keynote address, general and breakout sessions, and poster exhibits to strengthen subject matter expertise.
?Contribute to follow-up trip reports.
?Staff booth during professional meetings, including set up and dismantling, if requested by marketing.
?Participate in Editorial Board meetings and other journal meetings as scheduled during the conference.
•Administration
oCalculate annual editorial budgets as requested by Publisher and ensure monthly expenses do not exceed budget.
oMonitor website and enewsletter analytics monthly and convey feedback to Publisher and editorial team.
oContribute monthly MOR highlights and report to Publisher.

Job Requirements

Education: BA English/Journalism, or related field
Experience: minimum 5 years in a publishing environment

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Hootsuite, Social Media, and Research

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

2-3 related conferences per year
