Kicking the Tires of WestlawNext
Last week I was at West?s headquarters in Eagan, Minnesota, with a dozen or so journalists and bloggers, attending a series of presentations on WestlawNext, the next generation of Westlaw. After some five years of development, it?s being launched today. Others who were in Eagan with me have already offered their thoughts on WestlawNext. I now do so.
And I do so even though transactional lawyers don?t represent the core users of Westlaw. (That?s been my assumption, and responses to the polls in this recent blog post appear consistent with that.) So regular readers of this blog might not find WestlawNext of compelling interest. But I use Westlaw a lot, so indulge me if I go slightly off message for this post.
Westlaw Next Where’s The Beef
Reuters has been claiming that it?s ?next gen? product WestlawNext will practically do your research for you, and as you know monopolies like Westlaw are famous for truthfulness so I don?t see why we shouldn?t trust them. Do you?
For instance, check out the above video. I couldn?t help noticing that there is nothing substantive in it, or in any of the company?s other marketing pieces for this product. Not the slightest attempt to tell me why this bill of goods is any better than the last one. Come on Westlaw. How do you look yourself in the eyes every morning? Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice ? and I won?t buy your bullshit anymore. How about asking lawyers what they really need for a change instead of selling high-priced hot air? In short, I sa….
Westlaw, LexisNexis Debut Revamped Research Tools at LegalTech New York
An entire industry has grown up around interpreting legal research needs and finding information for lawyers and their clients. Researchers have to remember where information resides and extract relevant documents in a compressed amount of time using Boolean syntax and other search strategies. LexisNexis’ Lexis for Microsoft and Thomson Reuters’ WestlawNext aim to make online research easy, and effective, through very different strategies that will make for an interesting show at LegalTech New York, Feb. 1-3.
