Judge Rejects ROSS Intelligence’s Dismissal Attempt of Thomson Reuters Suit Over Westlaw Content

Judge Leonard Stark in Wilmington, Delaware, allowed to move forward Thomson Reuters’ claims that ROSS scraped the Westlaw database to create its own platform, but noted that ROSS raised “important and interesting questions” over the copyrightability of Westlaw content.

A federal judge rejected ROSS Intelligence’s bid to dismiss claims from Thomson Reuters, who accused the legal research firm of mining the Westlaw database to create a competing platform.

The decision is an early blow to ROSS, which shuttered operations, in part, due to the financial strain of the litigation with Thomson Reuters, according to the company. ROSS has filed counterclaims accusing the media conglomerate of deploying anti-competitive tactics to maintain Westlaw’s dominance in the space.
