Jobs For The Boys In China At KWM

Well can’t say this one comes as much of a surprise

The Lawyer Asia
China the winner of KWM’s latest global promotion round

King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) has promoted 36 to its global partnership with a heavy China focus. The majority of the new partners, 24, are based in China with Beijing and Shanghai seeing the largest number of promotions. Two lawyers were made up in Hong Kong.

While six lawyers were brought into the partnership in Australia, one of them is relocating to Singapore in the process. Europe, meanwhile, only had four promotions including just two in London. The promotions round comes shortly after The Lawyer revealed KWM had reviewed its UK partnership with up to 15 legacy SJ Berwin partners to depart the firm with immediate effect.

In contrast, the Asia Pacific-headquartered firm had a more even promotion round across its regions. Of the 26 promoted to partners last year, less than half, or 10, were in China, seven in Australia and nine across Europe and the Middle East.

Another firm that is focusing on its growth in Asia is Holman Fenwick Willan. Last week, it unveiled its plan to launch a new office in Indonesia after the hire of Jakarta-based partner Haydn Dare from Herbert Smith Freehills.
