Jakarta Post Publishes Article About Entry Of Foreign Lawyers Into Indonesian Legal Market

India, Korea and now it’s Indonesia’s turn to start debating the issues.


This article published in the Jakarta Post over the weekend was authored? by Otto Hasibuan the president and Tony Budidjaja the international relations officer, of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi).

If we thought the Indian debate was / is a long drawn out process we’d imagine the Indonesians will give them a run for their money.

Bets on who introduces legislation first anyone ? – India or Indonesia

They write:

The key challenge in coping with the entry of foreign lawyers into the local market is the increased competition for a share of the market. With the globalization of the world economy, it has become imperative to produce high level lawyers not only in knowledge and skills but in strength of character. Indonesian lawyers should be aware that excellent technical knowledge and skills alone are not enough. These need to be backed up by good character and robust professional and ethical values. Integrity without knowledge is ineffective and useless. Knowledge without integrity is dangerous and debilitating.

The time has come for Indonesian lawyers to cooperate and compete more with lawyers from other countries. To be more successful, Indonesian lawyers must, without further ado, improve themselves so as to be able to make progress and compete. Lawyers who do not make this effort, or who are unable to develop and deploy competence and character will lack the cutting edge and lose out on the great opportunities that lie ahead.
