Editorial
In this issue we learn that T.Westlaw have a new head honcho in the UK. Read the press release and platitudes in our lead story in the publishing section.
Also it seems to be the month for website re-jigs in the States. Both Law.com and Hein online have had a play with their interfaces. As a subscriber you may well notice the difference (tell us if you do). As an outsider we?re at a bit of a loss to say much about the changes if indeed there are any.
A couple of interesting blog articles on Legal KM which take a look at some of the issues raised at the recent Ark KM conference. It appears some that there?s a point of confusion between the terms ?Knowledge Management? and ?Client Services? by a number of the presenters at the conference.
Legal Geek Blog write in their post: You Can Call It Knowledge Management If That Makes You Feel Better About Yourself
The biggest problem with KM in a law firm seems to be the fact that those creating the knowledge (aka attorneys) either have to actively participate in the KM process, or allow for some type of automation in the KM process. Unfortunately, the attorneys seem to neither want to?actively?participate, nor do they want their information/knowledge to be automatically captured. This makes for a tough position for KM to be in.
This is an old story with law firms. In the days when we all called them libraries back in the 20th century LLN remembers many librarians saying the same things about the attitudes of partners who after attending a couple of workshops on legal content management became instant experts on how libraries should be run and managed and of course ?budgeted?.
Things haven?t changed. In actual fact we think they are now worse for law librarians and KM?s because as there are more tech types, workshops and conference providers only too happy to bend the ear of willing partners who see technological magic bullets everywhere they look in order to help them get what they want.
In reality what they want can only be supplied by well educated and trained staff in their library, and we hasten to add, not the marketing department.
If LLN were around in 2065 which thank god we won?t be. We know that the same tussle between partners (probably COO?s by then) and library / KM managers will be rearing it?s ugly head.
