Business not as usual really.
It looks to us (from a distance) that the legal market in general is taking the knife to their legal database subscriptions through various methodologies.
We?ve seen the US law firm who are further training their staff to become far more efficient with their searches so that wastage in absolutely minimal. We?ve seen discussions about public legal libraries consolidating physically and online so as to end database duplication. Also have a look at our story of the Texas plaintiff appealing against a ruling that they can only file in court if they use LN?s online electronic filing service.
We?re sure there are a 1000 similar stories and decisions being made at law firms, govt depts. and other institutions to try and cut costs.. there goes the bottom line yet again. And now with further problems in Europe executives must be looking nervously at markets like Spain, Italy and other EU countries. The revenues aren?t huge compared to the US but at the moment every cent counts.
Plenty of KM stories in this newsletter as we have the latest issue of David Gurteen?s KM missive including the following pieces
How vunerable is our high-tech civilisation to black swans?
iPad danger: app v. web, consumer v. creator
Are You Using the Wrong Leadership Competencies?
Blogging and tweeting from the recent HKKMS Conference in Hong Kong

And before we go we must mention Sarah Glassmeyer?s fabulous legal consolidation chart ( see the story in our legal publishing section .. a must read for everybody.
She writes:
Earlier this week, I saw a report about Thomson closing Banks-Baldwin?s Cleveland <http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/law_librarian_blog/2010/04/thomson-reuters-closes-banksbaldwin-cleveland-suburb-office.html> ?office. That got me thinking about all the mergers that have taken place in the legal information world over time and, being of the USA Today Infographic Generation, I was hoping that there would be a visual representation out there of them, similar to Marshall Breeding?s ILS merger chart <http://www.librarytechnology.org/automationhistory.pl?SID=20100421130065917> , so I could better understand what has happened.
There wasn?t. ??.So I made one. <http://create.ly/g8adae792>
Thankyou Sarah
Best wishes Sean Hocking ??LLN
