Issue 193 Law Librarians News Published – See Editorial & TOC

As we mentioned in our last issue. ?Q.1 of 2010 is drawing to a close and it?ll ?be interesting to see how legal publishers and information providers of all stripes are faring this year when they start to release results.

As one publisher said to us this past week.. ?legal publishing opportunities are melting faster than an ice cube on a July New York City sidewalk?. It?s a analogy that?s stayed with LLN all week as we watch companies scrabble for new ideas, concepts and direction.

Westlaw have launched WestlawNext ?as we?re all aware by now. But they don?t really want to talk about pricing.. does this mean they won?t want to talk about take up of the product later in the year.

Then we see companies/ divisions like Martindale Hubbell trying to reinvent themselves as champions of social networking.. we can?t believe that there are that many people out there that really believe that ?this will succeed for them ?the further we go into 2010.

They only seem to be upping membership to their club by bringing on groups such as the so and so In House Counsel association.. we always thought that social networking was all about ?building networks from the bottom up , not the same old top down approach.

Meeting with one of our North American legal publishing ?sources this week made us also realize that it?d be interesting to know where companies like ?Lexis Nexis see their cultural heart these days.

Dayton, we learn, has become a bit of a backwater in terms of company politics and it looks as though having a New York address is where it?s at for management bods.

Here?s a daring assertion though . may the future of LN actually lie in Mumbai and Chennai rather than New York & London

We don?t see why not. A relatively cheap and ?educated workforce with English as a first language. A new management class educated in the US, UK & Australia and ?very importantly a management class that has a burning desire to succeed that?s second to none .

Don?t forget, too.. ?a vastly improved technology and communications ?sector with some of the best software engineers on the planet ? and ?last but not least a society that has a pretty firm grasp of the concept of ?The Rule of Law?

Many are looking to China as our future but for companies that support and feed off the ?international legal services sector LLN is convinced that India is the future.

Best wishes
