Welcome to our first issue of 2010.
Sorry to say it is a bit of a mega issue. January hasn?t been its usual quiet self.
In the news this past month there?s been more than a flurry of activity.
?
Westlaw Next Launches
Google Launches Legal Database
Lexwiser Launches
Law Library of Congress On You Tube & I Tunes
ALM Release New Product ?Pulse?: Filters the Web for Lawyers
Law Library of Congress On You Tube & I Tunes
Cornell LII Launches Citer
?
And that?s only the major developments
We?ve also got changes at LLN. As we mentioned in December Joy has decided to take a sabbatical from ?excited utterances? so we?ve introduced a new ?Legal KM? section of the newsletter which we hope will provide you with all and more info and news related to legal km issues
We?ve also played with the format of the newsletter a little and hope that you find everything fairly simple to find.
New sections of the newsletter include ?Tweets & Twits? where we highlight some of the Tweets that got our attention over the past fortnight.
We have also built upon our jobs and conference sections of the newsletter to bring you what we feel is a comprehensive overview of the current market.
If you have any comments at all please don?t hesitate to get in touch.
Finally a short comment on Westlaw Next which seems to have about publicity as Avatar; it?ll probably generate a similar revenue as well. LLN hasn?t seen the service as yet but other legal info bloggers are impressed by the technology and the presentation. We have noticed a number of comments about a rather complicated pricing structure . That?s no surprise to us and we presume we won?t really get a sense of pricing until people start commenting on their invoices. An interesting year ahead as Lexis are meant to come up with their upgrade sooner rather than later.
So; eighteen months ago we had the last days of the old Westlaw & LN databases as your only market choice and now in the US at least there are 4 big players to choose from LN, Westlaw, Bloomberg & Google.
Only one sad footnote in this? PreCYdent which blazed the path for a new approach has sadly gone off the air as it couldn?t find any further funding. We?re pretty sure though that it won?t be long before another new service comes up.. the legal database market is a profitable one and that in turn will keep new players trying the market
