The defining fortnight of 2009 in the world of big law publishing?
We would say so
? Reed?s new man quits after only 8 months in the job
? The launch of google scholar
? Rumours abound about both West and Bloomberg looking at LN (or parts thereof) as an acquisition target
We?re not sure much more could happen in ten working days and in 7 years of publication we don?t quite remember so many stars aligning or un-aligning depending which way you look at it; in such a short period
Ian Smith?s departure from Reed last week reeks of politics and a man who was obviously expected to steer the good ship Reed; as had the mighty captain Crispin.
But instead of being a glorious Nelson at Trafalgar it appears he?s suffered the corporate version of the fate of Admiral Byng (http://home.wxs.nl/~pdavis/Byng.htm) in 1757.
Then: this week the announcement that we all knew would come at some point. Google?s entry into the world of legal information.
As many commentators have pointed out Google are nowhere near providing competition to Lexis & Westlaw but here at HOB we don?t really see the point of that argument. The simple fact is that Google is now in the market. And once they make a decision to supply information they tend to move only forwards and at pace. We may not see any major announcements from them again in 2009 but 2010 will we?re sure, bring developments. (see our story in LLN news)
Lexis & West will now have to develop strategies to compete with what they think Google might do over the next 18-36 months. It?ll be interesting times. Especially so as rumours are already circulating that both West and Bloomberg may be looking at Lexis as an acquisition target.

KM at Work: A Look at How Organizations Maximize Knowledge to Deliver Results
For law firm Gibbons, P.C., the crux of the KM issue has always been “knowledge as an asset for service delivery to clients,” according to Patrick V. DiDomenico, the firm’s chief knowledge officer. Like many law firms, Gibbons uses an application by LexisNexis called Total Search, which is made specifically for the legal market. DiDomenico points out that the firm, established in 1926, has a long history, so “there is lot of knowledge on those servers, and chances are someone has done something similar, whether it is a type of case or type of deal or written the type of contract before.” The ROI, he says, is that “you are spending 5 hours instead of 15” finding that information, saving time, which also translates into cost savings for the client-something very important these days.
Also worth a scan is Sabrina I. Pacifici’s completely revised and updated pathfinder focuses on leveraging selected reliable, focused, free and low cost sites and sources to effectively profile and monitor companies, markets, countries, people, and issues Competitive Intelligence ? a Selective Resource Guide ( see excited utterances)
