Only one story over the past fortnight that really stands out and that?s the West ?No to Law Librarians missive sent out last week?.
This bit of emailing marketing to practitioners has to be ,in our estimation ,one of the strangest pieces of marketing ever undertaken by a legal publisher.
We all know that it isn?t a state secret the both Lexis & West as well as a myriad of other legal publishers and legal information suppliers always try to bypass the library budget in order to make more money from firms and persuade gullible partners that they have a better idea of information management than the people they have hired to do the job.
But this email from West, does as they say, take the biscuit. Not only were they dumb enough to try and bypass librarians they also did their best to insult with the imagery of the email.
We do actually feel a modicum of sympathy for Anne Ellis the director at West who?s job it?s been to put out the fire created by the company?s marketing department. Although she did only send out a rather limp apology to librarians and KM?s around the US, we presume and hope she?s been on the phone telling libraries that they are valued customers and that this sort of thing won?t be happening again.
All in all it?s been a bit of a horror fortnight for West in the US. You can follow this and other West dramas at our HOB blog at http://www.practicesource.com
We presume Lexis managers must be glad it?s not them on the firing line for once. That said, I think we can be fairly certain that?s it?s not long before they make a similar cock up: as senior management and sales directors put the pressure on staff to increase declining revenues.
In excited utterance this week Joy has an article on David Hobbie the, Litigation Knowledge Manager, at Goodwin Proctor who comments on his firm?s experience with Enterprise 2.0 technology.
Also Lawyer, writer and blogger Nicole Black advises fellow professionals about important core techniques and goals to consider before jumping on the ?social media? bandwagon in her article Five Things Lawyers Should Know About Social Media
In the piece Document Lifecycle Management: Beyond Matter-Centricity . Joy discusses how the worlds of document management (DM), records management (RM), and knowledge management (KM) are all merging in the minds of IT thought-leaders faster than most software vendors seem to be able to grasp .
And finally the ILTA has published a white paper on KM entitled Knowledge Management: More than the Sum of its Parts (June 2009)
