Irish Law Society video contest to highlight human rights

The Law Society’s Human Rights and Equality Committee is inviting all students of law to participate in its 2022/23 Human Rights Student Competition.

Students are invited to submit a video identifying an important human-rights issue within Irish society, and provide a discussion on the effectiveness of the existing legal framework in protecting that particular right.

Format

Students are encouraged to be creative and ‘think outside the box’ when delivering the discussion, format and content of the video.

The winning entry will be awarded €500 and publicised on the Law Society’s social media. All entrants will be informed of the results.

All students of law, trainee solicitors, those studying for the BL degree, and those currently devilling are invited to participate.

Subject matter

Marks will be awarded for:

  • Importance and complexity of the legal issues involved,
  • Authority of the argument and relevance of human-rights law to the topic,
  • Relevance of the topic to present issues within Irish society,
  • Originality and creativity,
  • Research, and
  • Presentation.

Creative delivery

Students are invited to be creative in the delivery of the video, which may include a PowerPoint presentation, interview, or short play.

The video must not exceed 15 minutes, and the audio must be of sufficient quality to ensure that all speakers can be heard. Video entries exceeding 15 minutes will be automatically eliminated. Entries are restricted to one per candidate. However, up to three students may work on the same entry.

Students are expected to record their video using a ‘home’ device, such as mobile phone, laptop, tablet or camera.

Students must upload their video to a suitable file-sharing platform, such as Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Docs or YouTube.

A link to the video on the file-sharing platform must be included in the submission email. Additional information required includes: full name, level of study (undergraduate, LLM, FE1) and a brief written description outlining the content of the video and topic(s) discussed.
