The disciplinary court of the East Azerbaijan Bar Association has summoned Ali Azimi, the former head of the provincial branch of the Human Rights Commission, IranWire reports, amid a crackdown on human rights lawyers.
The primary objective behind the move seems to be the cancellation of Azimi’s license.
The accusations leveled against him include providing legal representation to protestors opposing encroachments on land and environmental degradation caused by the Andrian gold mine and showing alleged disrespect toward the country’s leadership.
The disciplinary court of East Azerbaijan has already taken action against other human rights lawyers.
Amir Mahdipour, a member of the Human Rights Commission within the provincial Bar Association, was recently suspended for five months.
On August 20, parliament passed a resolution obliging lawyers’ associations to adhere strictly to the decisions made by the Ministry of Economy’s deregulation board.
Lawyers held rallies across the country on August 24 to protest the move.
