The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has asked the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police (PNP) the investigate the attack against lawyer Hamilcar Bigornia, the organization’s chater president in Abra.

“Rather than be cowed and stilfed by the spiraling violence committed towards our lawyers, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines stands with all peace-loving citizens in condemning the brtality inflicted on Atty. Bigornia,” it said in a statrement Wednesday (Feb. 1).

With this, the IBP said that its members “appeal to our brothers in the NBI, PNP, and other law enforcement agencies to investigate this matter as well as any other unsolved instances that seriously impinge upon the rule of law.”

“The incisive and growing impunity towards lawyers, judges, and officers of the Court has fostered an overwhelming climate of dread,” it admitted.

“The attempted murder of Atty. Bigornia is added to the growing list of attacks and killings of lawyers and judges in the Philippines,” it added.

The IBP declared that hired killers and their masterminds have “no place in a civilized society.”

“Violence directed toward the members of our justice system must never be tolerated,” the IBP stated.

The organization said two men including the assailant went to the office of the lawyer last Sunday morning (Jan. 29).

The assailant stabbed the lawyer and his aide.

Fortunately, another aide of Bigornia came to their aid and shot dead the attacker.
