Unidentified miscreants stabbed Majid Akhtar with sharp weapons, leaving him grievously injured, before fleeing as locals intervened
A shocking incident unfolded on Sunday evening in central Kolkata’s Rajabazar area when a lawyer-engineer, identified as Majid Akhtar, was brutally attacked by unidentified miscreants.
Lawyer ambushed while entering his home
According to witnesses, the attack took place around 9:15 pm as Akhtar was returning home after buying food. Just as he reached the gate of his residence, 4–5 men armed with sharp weapons suddenly pounced on him and began hacking him indiscriminately.
Victim sustained serious multiple body injuries
Akhtar suffered grievous injuries to his neck, arms, and other parts of the body. Covered in blood, he collapsed on the road before residents rushed to his rescue. On seeing the crowd approach, the attackers fled the spot.
Police team reached spot, probe begins
The injured lawyer was immediately taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Upon hearing the news, a team from the Amherst Street Police Station arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. Officers are scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the attackers. The motive behind the assault remains unclear.
Calcutta High Court advocate demands Advocate Protection Act
Advocate Mijanul Kabir of Calcutta High Court condemned the attack on Advocate Majid Akhtar, calling it “a grave threat not just to an individual, but to the legal fraternity and the justice system.” He emphasized that lawyers handling sensitive cases remain vulnerable without proper protection and urged the West Bengal government to take immediate action. Kabir reiterated the long-standing demand for the Advocate Protection Act, saying it is essential for lawyers to work without fear or intimidation.
