Lawyer Assaulted in Surat: Attack Raises Alarming Questions Over Safety of Legal Professionals
Advocate alleges assault linked to cases against alleged land mafia; incident sparks concern over lawyers’ ability to discharge professional duties without fear
Surat: A brutal assault on an advocate in Surat’s Limbayat area has triggered serious concerns about the safety of legal professionals and the growing challenges they face while performing their duties.
According to preliminary information, Advocate Altaf Bharuchi sustained serious injuries, including a severe injury near his eye, after he was allegedly attacked by neighbour Imran Mansuri and three to four associates following a dispute over vehicle parking. He is currently undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, Surat.
Speaking over the telephone from the hospital, Advocate Bharuchi alleged that the attack was not merely the result of a parking dispute. He claimed that the accused harboured animosity against him because he had been representing clients in cases involving persons he described as members of a land mafia, and that this professional rivalry culminated in the alleged assault. These allegations are yet to be independently verified and remain subject to police investigation.
The incident has reignited debate over the safety of advocates who routinely appear in contentious civil and criminal matters. Members of the legal fraternity argue that if lawyers become targets for performing their professional responsibilities, it could undermine the administration of justice and weaken public confidence in the rule of law.
The attack has also raised broader questions about law and order, with legal circles calling for a swift, impartial investigation and stringent action against those found responsible. They have further urged the authorities to ensure adequate protection for advocates so they can discharge their professional obligations without intimidation or fear.
Police are investigating the incident. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
