According to Wadud, who appeared for Islam in court, the advocate was in his lawyers’ uniform, showed police his Bar ID card, and was carrying copies of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) when he was detained.

Lawyer and Congress spokesperson Aman Wadud on Saturday said that a Muslim lawyer, advocate Ariful Islam, has been remanded to judicial custody until 7 August after being detained by Assam Police for more than 24 hours, despite allegedly being a bystander near the site of a NEET protest in Guwahati.

According to Wadud, who appeared for Islam in court, the advocate was in his lawyers’ uniform, showed police his Bar ID card, and was carrying copies of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) when he was detained.

Wadud said Islam was booked under Section 152 of the BNS, which pertains to acts allegedly endangering the “sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.”
