India: Assam: Lawyer attacked while assisting flood affected people in Karimganj, sparks outrage

In a disturbing incident that has sparked outrage and gone viral on social media, an advocate named Hasina Rahman Chowdhury was brutally beaten by a gang while trying to help refugees in the Dimpur area of Sutarkandi. Despite the case being registered over a week ago, the perpetrators have yet to be apprehended, raising serious concerns about the safety of women in the region.

The attack occurred as Rahman Chowdhury, a resident of Dimpur, was actively involved in relief efforts for flood victims. The incident took place near the Karimganj headquarters, where the circle officer’s office had staged a protest demanding adequate relief materials for those affected by the floods. Following the protest, relief supplies were allocated from the circle officer’s office.

However, as the relief materials reached the distribution point, a group of men and women launched an unprovoked attack on Rahman Chowdhury. The advocate was assaulted in broad daylight on the highway. Despite lodging a complaint at the Sadar police station, no action has been taken against the assailants. This lack of response has drawn criticism from local women, who have expressed their support for the victim.

The failure to arrest the attackers, even after such a blatant assault on an advocate, has raised alarming questions about the safety and protection of ordinary women. In a press conference, Rahman Chowdhury emphasized the urgent need for justice and the accountability of law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of all citizens.
