A Hong Kong lawyer has been released on HK$2,000 (US$258) bail after being charged with misleading a police officer by making false accusations against the force.
Muhammad Kamran Chaudhry, 42, made his first appearance at Eastern Court on Monday for allegedly misleading a sergeant in the Complaints Against Police Reporting Centre when he filed a grievance on December 3 last year.
A charge sheet available for inspection by the press does not contain details of the allegedly false claims made by the accused, and whether all or part of his complaint filed that day at Wan Chai police headquarters has been deemed untruthful.
While prosecutors were ready to proceed, Chaudhry asked to postpone entering a plea to review prosecution evidence and seek legal advice.
Magistrate Cheang Kei-hong scheduled the next hearing for July 29 and granted the defendant bail.
Knowingly misleading a police officer carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison and a HK$2,000 fine under the Police Force Ordinance.
