An university in Hong Kong announced on Thursday that it welcomed the use by students of artificial intelligence-enabled (AI) tools such as ChatGPT in coursework – the second university in the city to green-light their use.
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) said students would be allowed to employ AI-enabled tools in their assignments if they declare such use and “articulate their reflections” on the process.
The university said in a statement it would incorporate new technology into its teaching methods, while also ensuring that students’ work adheres to standards of academic integrity through the use of detection tools.
“The emergence of AI technology has brought about tremendous change to conventional teaching. Teachers should be more proactive than ever in serving as facilitators to foster students’ understanding about the strengths and constraints of AI, while promoting the responsible use of technology, ” said EdUHK’s vice president John Lee.
It was the second university in the city to embrace the use of AI technology, after the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology gave “limited approval” at the beginning of March.
In a letter to staff, HKUST said the decision on whether or not to allow students to use AI tools would be left to individual teaching staff.
However, two other top universities, the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, have banned the use of AI tools unless course instructors say otherwise.
