It is the fourth office that the firm has opened since 2011 that is devoted to providing clients with so-called alternative legal services, a unit that is designed to help clients reduce their legal bills without sacrificing quality.

“It’s offshore, but it’s risk-wrapped by Herbert Smith Freehills’ [reputation],” said Libby Jackson, who heads up the alternative legal services function at HSF.

In taking on such a project, HSF is competing with independent outsourcing companies such as Integreon, Pangea3, QuisLex, United Lex, Mindcrest and others that have built their entire business models around staffing lawyers in low-cost regions to handle routine legal work.
