The Head of Collection Development and Acquisitions is responsible for and oversees the Collection Development department.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update collection development and acquisitions policies and procedures. I nitial selection of new purchases, focusing on monographs and treatises. Communicate departmental goals, policies, procedures, and guidelines for the department. Assign responsibilities, projects, and supervise department workflow. Train, supervise, and evaluate departmental personnel in all activities. Evaluate new information resources. Generate statistics and create reports related to Collection Development and Acquisitions. Participate in library-wide projects to increase knowledge and use of legal resources for students, faculty, and staff of the School of Law, as well as to the University community at large, to members of the Bar, and to the general public.
  • Manage library acquisitions including order placement, invoice processing, order creation, the addition of brief bibliographic records into the Integrated Library System, and the resolution of billing issues. Monitor monograph and serials receipts and claims. Update records with information from supplier reports. Establish/maintain order arrangements and manage the claims process. Resolve discrepancies between Library’s records, suppliers’ records, and actual receipts. Generate subscription renewal lists to identify malfunctioning orders and for administrative review.
  • Responsible for oversight and maintenance of approval plans, package plans, standing orders, and similar programs. Establish and maintain relationships with vendors and serve as primary contact point with legal vendors. Under supervision, monitor and administer the collections budget. Negotiate prices and subscription terms with vendors.
  • Oversee collection management in the library, including space planning, stack signage, bindery shipments, missing material lists, and the repair needs for the library. Oversee departmental staff activities involving shelving, shifting, updating and processing of materials.
  • Keep current with trends in librarianship and with activities in the legal publishing industry. Regularly compile departmental statistical data. Prepare and update regular and special acquisitions documentation, forms, and reports as necessary. Provide orientation to local acquisition practices and procedures to new Library staff as requested.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

Graduate degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent; 3 or more years’ experience performing library acquisitions and/or collection development activities; 3 or more years’ supervisory experience; strong oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to work with great attention to detail and accuracy; excellent organizational skills and ability to meet project deadlines. Applicants must have a strong service orientation and an interest in innovation. Applicants must have a professional demeanor, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Applicants must have excellent organizational, time-management and analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

 

Preferred Qualifications

JD from ABA-accredited law school. Prior experience working with purchasing library print and electronic resources; establishing relationships with library vendors; professional experience working in a law library or with legal information resources.

Working Conditions

May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation, use of manual dexterity. Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Wear appropriate office attire; accept supervision.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
