Head of Cataloging position at the UCLA Hugh & Hazel Darling Library, UCLA School of Law
The UCLA Law Library seeks a Head of the Cataloging to carry out the cataloging goals of the Law Library by establishing priorities, setting policy, implementing procedures, supervising staff, and sharing the day-to-day cataloging workload with two other catalogers.
Under the direction of the Director, Bibliographic Services, the Head of Cataloging oversees, participates in, and reports on the daily operations of the Law Library’s cataloging section. Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Implement cataloging policies based on national and UCLA standards
Develop and implement local cataloging policies as needed, based on the specific needs of the Law School’s faculty and students
Directly supervise, train, and evaluate one librarian and one library assistant
Perform original and complex contributed cataloging in a variety of Western European languages and in all bibliographic and physical formats, including monographs, serials, print loose-leafs, audiovisual materials, and electronic resources, applying national standards according to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and Library of Congress guidelines
Perform name, series, and subject authority work, and contribute or revise name, series and subject authority records in the national authority files
Evaluate vendor-supplied records, arranging for their retrieval from OCLC or other external sources; prepare import profiles as needed, and oversee bulk loading of record sets
Resolve complex bibliographic problems and conflicts in bibliographic records
Work closely with public services staff to resolve questions and concerns regarding records in the online public catalog
Develop and implement special cataloging projects as needed
Oversee (and in some cases perform) a variety of cataloging maintenance activities, using global data change functions when possible
Serve as campus liaison for cataloging, systems, serials and e-resources management related committees and task groups
Requirements
Basic Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent education and experience
Minimum of five years of cataloging experience in an academic law library setting, working with a variety of bibliographic formats
Minimum of three years of supervisory or project oversight experience in an academic library setting, including training and developing documentation
Up-to-date knowledge of, and experience in, applying the following cataloging tool and resources: Cataloging Legal Literature 5th edition, Resource Description and Access (RDA), the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2r), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data
Experience in cataloging materials through a cataloging utility such as OCLC, in an integrated library system environment
Demonstrated ability to apply national cataloging policy and practice as determined by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and the Library of Congress
Experience in retrieving, modifying (either through an external program or within the ILS itself), and loading record sets into a bibliographic database
Demonstrated ability to make decisions independently within the framework of departmental and library policies and goals
Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in order to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities
Firm commitment to a high level of service to faculty and students in a demanding academic environment
Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers and software, the Internet, and library-relevant information technology applications
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of people in a diverse multicultural environment
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Applicants with all the above basic qualifications and any of the following preferred qualifications or professional experiences are strongly encouraged to apply: (1) Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma integrated library system; (2) Experience cataloging in a PCC institution; (3) Experience working in a consortium-based cataloging environment; (4) Reading knowledge of at least one modern foreign language.
