Head, Legal – Myanmar

The Company

The company is a leading, Fortune 500 giant and which has been focused upon its Myanmar business growth for the last 4 years since its market entry. It has systematically appointed expatriate and repatriate personnel into key position and it now requires a suitably experienced Burmese lawyer for the position of Head of Legal.

The Position       

Reporting to the Country Head, the Head of Legal will provide thought-leadership and drive the company’s understanding and observation of Myanmar corporate law (corporate regulations, employment law, investment law and similar) whilst providing substantial support to contracts management relating to customer and supplier agreements. There will be a need to ensure these are aligned to corporate governance and compliance standards yet concurrently preserve the company’s competitiveness too. The appointed individual will advise on all company projects and initiatives whilst reviewing potential commercial risk and appropriate solutions. There will be a need to collaborate with all key corporate functions including HR, Supply Chain, Commercial Management, Finance as well as representing the company for external matters relating to Government departments and external Counsel. There will be an accompanying requirement to manage Corporate Secretarial duties relating to Board meetings whilst maintaining all records and completing filings and associated actions.

This is a fast-paced position that will be supported by a junior- mid-career lawyer and who will report to the appointed individual.

The Person 

Interested candidates will ideally offer a Law Degree (LLB) and around 5-8+ years PQE preferably with overseas/international training. Professional expertise will include corporate, litigation and labour law and preferably offering prior leadership experience within an in-house Counsel position. Prior exposure to the management of commercial contracts should be high and considered a personal strength whilst broad legal exposure will be most desirable. In addition, interested candidates should demonstrate an ability to multi-task, objectively analyse legal/commercial issues and resolve these in a balanced manner whilst demonstrating a keen awareness of commercial risks and sound judgement in their resolution. The role is suitable for Myanmar nationals who offer appropriate Burmese and English language skills.
