A high-profile lawyer was found dead overnight at his office in central Athens, with initial findings indicating he may have been beaten to death, according to police sources.
Stavros Georgiou, who had served as one of the prosecution lawyers during the trial of the November 17 terrorist group nearly two decades ago, was found with multiple head injuries and traces of dried blood at the scene.
A preliminary autopsy found no evidence of injuries caused by a sharp object or firearm.
According to police sources, Georgiou is believed to have been dead for several hours before his body was discovered, possibly since Tuesday morning or even the previous night.
Authorities said there were no obvious signs that the office had been ransacked. The area was sealed off as forensic teams examined the scene, while the investigation has been taken over by the Homicide Department.
The lawyer’s body was discovered by his daughters, who said they went to his office after being unable to reach him by phone.
Georgiou was widely recognized for his frequent television appearances, where he provided legal analysis on criminal law matters and commented on major court cases. Combined with his role in several high-profile trials, his media presence made him one of Greece’s most prominent and recognizable criminal lawyers.
