Google Files Trademark for ‘Non-Fungible Planet’

The filing details plans for the internet giant’s information campaign on environmental activism. writes CoinDesk

Google has filed a trademark application for “Non-Fungible Planet,” although it appears the company’s project has little to do with crypto tokens.

Outlined in the March 21 filing is an educational campaign aimed at “providing information in the areas of environmental protection, conservation, energy efficiency, climate change, reducing carbon footprints, environmental issues and sustainability efforts,” according to the filing.

The project plans to tap “entertainment services, namely, providing non-downloadable playback of curated video playlists via the internet and other communications networks” on the technical side.

The project’s play on non-fungible is likely in reference to the environmental impact of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that live on the proof-of-work Ethereum blockchain, a hotly controversial issue among mainstream critics of the technology.

In January, the CEO of Google-owned video platform YouTube said her company was eyeing NFTs as a new way to monetize content creation. YouTube lost a pair of its executives to Web 3 companies in the same week.

Google did not respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment by publication time.
