German court rules OpenAI violated music copyright laws by reproducing song lyrics

OpenAI’s ChatGPT was found to have reproduced lyrics of several musicians, violating German copyright law.

OpenAI has been found by a German court to have violated copyright law through its ChatGPT chatbot program. This time, OpenAI’s generative AI services got caught reproducing the lyrics of various popular German artists in its content. A judge found that OpenAI was in violation of several copyright laws and must pay an undisclosed amount in damages to the copyright holders.

The case’s outcome was reported by Reuters following a ruling earlier this week. The plaintiff was German music rights society GEMA, which represented a number of musicians whose music was illegally used by OpenAI to train its ChatGPT language models. Among the artists impacted were best-selling musician Herbert Groenemeyer, whose singles “Maenner” and “Bochum” were said to have been among nine songs included in the lawsuit. Judge Elke Schwager ultimately found in GEMA’s favor, ordering OpenAI to pay damages for the use of copyrighted material without permission, though the final amount was not shared.
