Georgetown’s Professor John Jackson Dies

HOB’s condolences go out to family, friends & colleagues

“William M. Treanor”

Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to share with you the sad news that Professor John Jackson died yesterday in Ann Arbor. He died peacefully, surrounded by his wife Joan and his daughters.

We have lost a giant. John was a major figure in international law, he played a central role in the development of our modern trade system, he built the Institute of International Economic Law, and, until the end of his life, he played a leadership role in thinking through the evolution of the field of international economic law. Indeed, in my last meeting with him, in Spring of this year, he excitedly discussed how Georgetown could act to shape that field.  Not only a gifted scholar, he was a great mentor to countless former students and to many on this faculty.   He was a man of absolute integrity and profound concern for others. It was privilege to be his colleague.

As memorial plans take shape, I will keep you informed, and I plan on holding a memorial here in the Spring.

Please keep John in your thoughts and prayers.

Sadly, Bill
