Gary Born resigns from expert committee of Chinese court

All good reasons for resigning in our book and we’re glad to see that the Chinese Govt  attacks on UK Chambers is mentioned as one of his reasons, people too easily like to brush those events under the carpet so it is good to see that he’s mentioned that.

Global Arbitration Review reports

Gary Born has resigned from an expert committee of China’s International Commercial Court “in light of actions of the government of the People’s Republic of China over the past year”.

Born, a leading international arbitration practitioner and author of International Commercial Arbitration, one of the most prominent publications in the field, wrote to the court to inform it of his immediate resignation from the International Commercial Expert Committee in December.

In the short letter, he wrote, “I believe the rule of law and protection of fundamental human rights and civilliberties are better served through my resignation than through continued association with the court’s work.””I trust you understand the reasons for my resignation and that, in the future, changed circumstances may permitrenewed cooperation with members of the court.”

Born did not state in the letter the specific actions of the Chinese government that prompted his resignation but GAR understands that its threatened use of force against Taiwan, actions against ethnic minorities in China andimposition of sanctions on British barristers and their chambers were among the factors that led to his decision.
