A QUICK trip to Sydney has cost alleged fraudster Craig Dean Raneberg his freedom.

The former South Australian chief financial officer at law firm Minter Ellison, who has lived in Bangkok since June, returned to Australia on Saturday to renew his Thai visa.

Raneberg’s passage through Customs at Sydney Airport triggered an “arrest on sight” alert.

SA Police wanted him detained for allegedly stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the law firm.

Australian Federal Police arrested the arts patron, who is now in custody with no chance of bail, because SA and NSW courts have ruled him a flight risk.

Raneberg, 48, has been charged with six counts of dishonestly taking property without the owner’s consent.

Police will allege he siphoned money from Minter Ellison accounts.

Police been investigating Raneberg since June, when Minter Ellison discovered financial irregularities in its internal audit.

The firm lodged a Supreme Court action against Raneberg, freezing his accounts and claiming he stole funds before leaving for Thailand in June, the same month he was made redundant after 10 years’ service.

SA Police on Tuesday asked the Adelaide Magistrates Court to issue an extradition warrant, arguing he would be unlikely to return to the state if granted bail.

The court agreed, granting the warrant and excluding Raneberg from release on bail upon his return.

A NSW court also denied him bail and remanded him in custody.
