Former Case Western law library director killed by lightning in Fla.

A 73-year-old Florida woman killed by lightning in Clearwater Wednesday evening has been identified as Kathleen Carrick, a former Case Western Reserve University director.

Clearwater Fire & Rescue officials said the incident happened in the 1300 block of Gulf Boulevard at the Bayside Gardens IV condominiums.

According to officials, Carrick’s body was found on a sidewalk not too far from her apartment. A tourist walking back from dinner saw the victim and called the police.

Before moving to Florida, Carrick served as the director of the law library at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland. She reportedly worked at the university for about 25 years.

According to Case Western Reserve University’s media department, Carrick left the university about 10 years ago.

The National Lightning Safety Council reports Carrick’s death is the 10th confirmed lightning death nationwide this year and the third in Florida.
