Job Summary

The Harvard Law School Library (HLSL) aims to collect the primary law of all jurisdictions of the world, and collects secondary material as appropriate based on the evolving research needs of the HLS community. The Collection Development Unit of the Harvard Law School Library is responsible for all aspects of building and maintaining the HLSL collections in print and digital format, including acquisition and deaccessioning. The Foreign Comparative and International Law Librarian is responsible for the selection and maintenance of foreign, comparative and international legal materials for the Harvard Law School Library (HLSL) collection; coordinates the selection activities of foreign, comparative and international materials by other librarians. In support of the research activities of the Harvard Law School community, the Librarian may provide jurisdiction specific research support to the Research Services team. The Librarian represents HLSL in collaborative collection at Harvard University and actively participates in HLSL, Harvard Library, consortia and external committees.

Position Description

As the Foreign Comparative and International Law Librarian you will:

  • Coordinate and select foreign, comparative, and international law – print and electronic materials.
  • Plan collection development strategies and policies and approve expenditures, in collaboration with the Manager of Collection Development.
  • Serve as a principal resource on collection development issues, and selection and maintenance; build the collection in designated area(s)
  • Coordinate collection development work of FCIL reference librarians; provide training and support to research librarian selectors
  • Analyze current and retrospective collection strengths and make recommendations for programmatic change in the collections
  • Under the direction of the Manager for Collection Development, assign fund expenditure priorities and consult on the gift and exchange process

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or a Master’s Degree in humanities with a focus on a foreign language
  • Two or more years of experience working in collection development in a library
  • Fluency in a Western European language

Working Conditions

This position works a combination of on-campus and remote work based on business needs and manager approval.
