Position Focus:

Collection Development

We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about foreign and international law. The primary focus of this position offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the law library’s work in the areas of foreign, comparative, and international law collection development, management, and maintenance. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Foreign and International Law and be a member of the foreign and international law team. The candidate will be part of the law library’s collection development team with selection responsibilities based on the candidate’s experience and language skills.

The Lillian Goldman Law Library’s Foreign and International Law Collection is regarded as one of the leading collections in the nation, supporting excellence in teaching, learning, and research. Our selectors currently collect in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese. Our Foreign and International Law Collection is a hybrid collection, consisting of both print and electronic materials. Research and Instruction

The Foreign and International Law Research Librarian will also be part of the general research and instruction team and be expected to provide legal research and reference services to students, faculty, staff, and the Yale community in a variety of ways. In addition, and based on the candidate’s experience and interest, the successful candidate may participate in legal research instruction offered at Yale Law School.

Outreach

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with library colleagues from all departments and library administration to lead and coordinate the library’s social media and other outreach efforts to promote library’s work, projects, publications, events, and other initiatives.

This position will also participate in developing and maintaining the Library’s online presence via the web site and other electronic means. The candidate will help maintain and/or develop print and online tools to educate and assist patrons in conducting legal research and using library resources. Interest in keeping up with evolving technologies is desired.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work on a variety of projects and initiatives, including creating exhibits and developing other law library activities according to the library’s needs and the candidate’s interest and aptitude. Strong emphasis on teamwork and commitment to fostering collaborative environment is desired.

Service to the Library and Professional Engagement

All professional librarians participate in library planning committees, working groups, and task forces within the Law Library, Law School, and the University Library. There are opportunities for professional growth, scholarship, and involvement in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. A successful candidate will be expected to be professionally active and represent the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. Strong individual growth and professional development is desired.

Essential Duties

Required Education and Experience

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school (or foreign equivalent) and Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science (or foreign equivalent).

Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated interest or experience in foreign and international law collection development. Proficiency in Foreign Languages Skills (German, French, and/or Italian language skills preferred).

Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated experience in providing research and reference support in areas of U.S. legal research. Demonstrated knowledge or interest in foreign, international, and comparative law.

Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated ability to function in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment that emphasizes customer service and delivery of exemplary research and instructional services. Strong public services orientation.

Required Skill/Ability 4:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; emotionally intelligent; positive attitude. Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively across units. Demonstrated ability to think independently, consult appropriately, and solve problems.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience with foreign and international law materials. Two years of experience providing research and reference support in an academic, public, or private law library. Experience teaching in a classroom setting or another learning environment. Experience with web development tools, web-based tools, social media, or other library technologies beyond online research databases.
