Forbes Article: How Law Firms Can Overcome The Commoditization Crisis In Legal Services

All about thought leaders, so won’t be a knew concept to 99% of you but worth noting that Forbes now telling all those lawyers that it’s all about thought leadership and being creative .

For what it’s worth here’s some of the piece

For lawyers to overcome the commoditization crisis in legal services, they need to focus on positioning themselves and their firms as the go-to authorities in specific fields. Claiming an “excellent knowledge of the law,” for example, is NOT a differentiating factor. Instead, what is required is that clients, prospects, and referral sources claim that particular lawyers and their firms are exceptional and the best of the best.

Being thought leaders is more and more a necessity for lawyers and their firms who want to excel – and in some cases even survive – in an increasingly commoditized legal environment. Being competent is table stakes when it comes to being a thought leader. It is critical for other people who can benefit you and your law firm to identify you as a highly capable expert.

Law firms can implement systematic processes to have their partners become thought leaders. Also, lawyers can often use the same methodologies on their own when their law firms are not able to support these efforts. The complication is that most lawyers are unaware of how to translate their expertise into becoming a thought leader.

Those lawyers and their firms that are thought leaders are going to do amazingly well going forward. Those lawyers and their firms that are NOT thought leaders are going to be progressively marginalized because of commoditization.
