Associated Press reported today that the Chinese authorities have fired a Supreme People’s Court judge suspected of taking bribes according to state media reports – the first time a top judge has been? removed amid such allegations.

Xinhua said Huang Songyou , a vice-president of the? Supreme People’s Court, was fired last October and had been ejected from the Communist Party. It said Mr Huang, 51, allegedly abused his powers by accepting bribes, but it did not say how much money he was suspected of taking or what he was? alleged to have given in return.

The report goes on to say

The case had been handed over to prosecutors, it said, but gave no other details. The report quoted Shen Deyong , executive vice- president of the top court, as saying it marked the first time the mainland had removed a top judge for suspected law and discipline violations.

The mainland has long struggled against corruption among high-level party officials. Shanghai’s former party chief, Chen Liangyu , became the most senior official to fall when he was sentenced last year to 18 years over a pension-fund scandal. Two years ago, the director of the mainland’s food and drug agency was executed for approving deadly fake medicine in exchange for cash.
