DIGITISATION of the laws of Fiji is the next step the Fijian Government will take to ensure more people are aware and able to understand the laws reports the Fiji Times.
Speaking during the LexisNexis Leadership Conference panel discussion on consolidation of laws in Fiji in Momi, Nadi yesterday, deputy Solicitor-General Tracey Wong said this was the next step taken after laws were consolidated in 2016.
“We want to put the laws of Fiji online so there is greater access by the public,” she said.
“This will promote the rule of law and the impact will be tremendous because you will have access to laws wherever you can get internet in Fiji.”
Also present at the event was Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who said the consolidation of laws had also benefitted those in the legal profession.
“Most law firms in Fiji are single practitioner law firms and it was very difficult and bigger law firms, which are a few, had their own library so it was difficult,” he said.
“Many times, you had perhaps lawyers misquoting or getting the law wrong, not because they were incompetent, but there were so many amendments they had to go through so that the judge had to work through that.”
He said the process — which the Government had collaborated with LexisNexis — had also removed discriminatory ethnic practices and simplified the law for Fijians.
