Fiji Law Society May Expel Lawyers

Radio New Zealand is reporting..

That  lawyers who take up positions with  the current interim regime could face expulsion from the Fiji Law Society.

Society president Dorsami Naidu says he is in discussion with members about the fate of these lawyers.

He says the society is waiting to see who will be appointed as judges and Chief Justice before taking action.

The entire judiciary was dismissed on 3 April by Fiji’s president. Eight magistrates were re-appointed on 20 April, with only one new name appearing in the line-up. New Zealand lawyer Christopher Pryde has been re-appointed Solicitor-General of Fiji.

 

And Voice of America is reporting that an Amnesty International report is predicting civil unrest and conflict with Fiji’s military government, as army commanders continue to tighten their grip. The international human rights organization claims conditions in the troubled South Pacific nation are getting worse by the day. Amnesty International is painting a serious picture of life in Fiji, as the military continues to increase its authority.
