DEPARTMENT FUNCTION
The New York City Bar Association, founded in 1870, is a voluntary association of lawyers and law students. Since 1896, the organization, officially known as the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, has been headquartered in a landmark building on 44th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Manhattan. Today the City Bar has over 24,000 members. Since its inception the City Bar has had one of the most comprehensive legal collections and is an actively used practitioner’s library with more than 20,000 visits a year.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES
- Manage the Library’s electronic information databases and provide members and City Bar employees with expert assistance in using electronic resources. Keep up to date with the latest resources in information services.
- Participates in introductory and advanced legal research instruction programs.
- Serves as Library liaison to the Small Law Firm Committee. Attends meetings of the Small Law Firm Committee on a monthly basis. Coordinates with the Small Law Firm Director on symposiums and serves as guest speaker on services provided by the City Bar Library.
- Review and assist in negotiating license agreements with publishers/vendors to reach favorable pricing and licensing terms.
- Coordinate with the City Bar’s IT department as needed.
- Participates in collection development for traditional print and electronic resources as part of the Library team.
- Provide coverage at the main Reference Desk on a rotating basis. Answer calls and emails from law firm librarians and members. Coordinates with the Supervisor of Copy Services to fulfil requests from members and librarians.
- Commitment to providing high-quality library service to a large group of demanding users in a fast-paced environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION
- Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited school or its equivalent and/or J.D. from an ABA accredited law school. Advanced knowledge of Lexis Advance, Westlaw Next, Bloomberg Law, Hein Online and other legal and business databases.
- Excellent interpersonal, writing and communication skills
- Flexibility to cover other library shifts.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- Customer service oriented.
- Committed to emerging technologies and library trends.
