Becoming an O shaped lawyer: The future of legal delivery
Lawyers are ‘people first; then lawyers’. The O Shaped Lawyer programme sees lawyers of the future practicing in a more human-centric and emotionally-intelligent way, elevating the delivery of legal services beyond technical excellence. Facilitated by key members of the O Shaped Lawyer working group (several of whom are senior in-house lawyers), this practical webinar will take you through the ‘Five Os framework’ to help equip you with the tools to develop the right mindset, behaviours and actions on your journey towards becoming an O Shaped Lawyer of the future:
- Be optimistic – adopt an optimistic mindset to help become a valued business partner, and not be seen as a risk averse business blocker.
- Make and take opportunities – make and take opportunities looking outside of the traditional spheres of lawyer influence.
- Be original – be creative and innovative in your approach to problem solving, looking forward, not backward.
- Be open – adopt a growth mindset through which you are always open to new ideas and perspectives.
- Take ownership – focus on taking accountability for business-driven outcomes beyond pure technical legal advice.

Dan Kayne
As General Counsel for the Regions team at Network Rail, Dan leads a talented team committed to delivering an excellent service to the business. Central to the business’ commitment to exceeding customers’ expectations is a fundamental understanding that it’s people are put first, always. It is this pursuit of excellence through the well-being and engagement of the team that led Dan to form The O Shaped Lawyer Programme.
Whilst the legal profession has always been known for its technical excellence, it is seldom seen as a profession that places the same level of importance on the engagement and development of its people. That is why the ‘O’ came about – to recognise that success requires a holistic approach. More rounded and engaged lawyers make for better lawyers and ultimately a profession which better serves its customers.
For Dan the ‘O’ should be the driving force to making this happen.
Natalie Salunke
Natalie is a member of The O Shaped Lawyer committee and is the Head of Legal for RVU – a group of online companies that work to empower consumers by helping them compare home services and financial products.
Prior to her role at RVU, Natalie carried out similar roles for Fleetcor, a global provider of specialised payment products and services to commercial fleets, major oil companies and petroleum marketers; the US’s largest car rental company, Enterprise Rent-A-Car; for US-listed cloud software provider, NetSuite (now part of Oracle), and was Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary of Venda, a UK-based eCommerce SaaS provider. In these roles she has been responsible for all company legal matters including adopting an advisory role in relation to the group’s shareholders, board of directors and executive management. Her three year tenure at Venda subsequently culminated in her leading the successful sale of the business to NetSuite. Natalie became Head of Legal at Venda at the age of 27. Before then, she worked in Travelex’s legal team based in London, having trained at international city law firm, Taylor Wessing.
