Director, Peter W. Rodino, Jr. Law Library, Seton Hall University School of Law

The Seton Hall University School of Law seeks a visionary and energetic Director for its Peter W. Rodino, Jr. Law Library for a position commencing January 1, 2019.

Seton Hall Law is home to approximately 500 JD students, and 300 MSJ students. Its 40 faculty members conduct cutting-edge research across a wide range of legal disciplines and engage in interdisciplinary work. The Law School is especially well-regarded in the health and life sciences law, intellectual property, cybersecurity, and privacy arenas, and it is in the process of expanding its role in energy, technology and data analytics. Seton Hall offers joint degrees with the University’s School of Diplomacy and Stillman School of Business. The University has recently entered into an affiliation to launch a new medical school, which will also expand opportunity for interdisciplinary research. The Rodino Library supports both the scholarly and educational missions of the Law School by providing faculty the sophisticated research support they require and by educating students in the creative use of the broad range of research tools available to them. The Director can anticipate being involved in traditional and innovative methods of information delivery across the curriculum and, as a member of the tenure-track faculty, can anticipate being intensely involved in the life of the School.

The responsibilities of the Director include management of an annual $1.9 million budget; supervision of 5.5 professional librarians and 6 support staff; and working with offices across the Law School and the University. More specifically, the position entails managing all aspects of the Rodino Library’s operations, including: collection development and management; continuing to move the Law Library to the forefront of recent developments in information services and technology; recommending library budgets and implementing those approved; management of the physical space of the library; and staffing assignments and other personnel decisions. The Director will report to an Associate Dean and must work closely with the Dean and other senior administrators.

The Director participates in teaching and as a member of the Law School faculty and will hold faculty rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. As such, the Director is expected to contribute to the scholarly enterprise and, if not hired with tenure, will be subject to the Law School’s Promotion and Tenure rules.

Requirements for the position include a JD from an ABA-accredited law school and either a Master’s or Ph.D. from an American Library Association-accredited school of library or information sciences. In addition, the successful candidate must have at least five years of successful experience in an academic law library, with experience in a senior management position preferred. The candidate must have the requisite determination to articulate a clear vision and mission for the Rodino Library, incorporating the need to align library services with the changing face of higher education, legal education, law practice, and legal publishing. The successful candidate must also demonstrate knowledge and ability in library administration, including both reader and technical services, as well as possess excellent supervisory, communication, and leadership skills.

The successful candidate will be appointed both as Director and as a member of the Law School faculty, with rank and tenure status commensurate with experience; salary and benefits will be competitive.
