Director of the Law Library Mercer University

The Director of the Law Library reports to the Dean of the Law School and is part of the law school’s senior leadership team. The Director is responsible for the planning and overall administration of the law library, including short- and long-term strategic planning, budgeting, hiring, management and development of library staff, collection development and management, and overseeing law library technology. The Director teaches and provides leadership in the law library’s legal research program, which includes a required first-year legal research course and elective advanced legal research courses. The Director may teach other courses, as needed.

The Furman Smith Law Library serves approximately 400 law students and 30 law faculty, as well as the local bar. Five professional librarians and five classified staff report to the Director. The Law School is part of a dynamic university with degree programs in liberal arts, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, engineering, business, education, theology and other areas. The University has more than 8500 students on campuses in Macon, Atlanta, and Savannah, GA. Mercer Law School is located in a beautifully restored historic district in downtown Macon. Qualifications

Applicants must hold a J.D from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school. Applicants must have substantial and progressively responsible experience in the administration of an academic law library, and a proven record of managing and supervising both full time law librarians and library staff in an academic setting. Required skills include the ability to develop and manage the full range of library resources, services and personnel. Applicants should have an understanding of existing and emerging technologies, an appreciation for the changing roles of libraries in the digital age, and the creativity to adapt the law library to new needs of students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and the broader community. Candidates must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, and other library patrons. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach in the classroom and a record of distinguished scholarship.
