LMU Loyola Law School in Los Angeles seeks a creative and collaborative leader as the next Director of the William M. Rains Law Library.
The Director oversees Library operations and services, including strategic planning, external relations, technology initiatives, budget development and management, personnel management, and legal research curriculum development and teaching. The Director is responsible for enhancing the library’s practices and procedures and utilizing existing and emerging technologies to facilitate the highest quality of service to all members of the community. Working closely with the Library’s staff and in collaboration with both the Law School and broader Loyola Marymount University community, the next Director will build on the Library’s strengths to develop and implement a strategic vision for the Library’s next chapter as the intellectual and cultural center of the Law School.
Core Responsibilities:
Responsible for the planning and overall administration of the law library, including short- and long-term strategic planning, budgeting, hiring, management and development of library staff, collection development and management, and overseeing and enhancing law library technology.
Ensures the law library is organized and managed in an efficient and productive manner and models a collaborative and collegial culture.
Promotes and creates professional development opportunities for library staff, particularly around technology, project management and communication.
Maintains and enhances the collection development policy for the law library to ensure a collection of print and digital resources that support the educational and scholarly needs of the law school.
Ensures an outstanding, broadly conceived approach to research and scholarly services, keeping in mind faculty, students, staff, and departmental needs.
Oversees the Legal Research curriculum in collaboration with reference librarians and faculty.
As a member of the faculty, the Director participates in activities related to faculty governance and professional service, and if tenure track, scholarly research.
The Rains Library plays a vital role in the teaching, scholarly, and service missions of the Loyola community, which includes approximately 1140 J.D. and other graduate-degree students, 59 full-time faculty members, and 170 staff. The selected candidate will join our diverse community of leading scholars in the areas of criminal law and criminal law reform, intellectual property, tax law, civil litigation, business and innovation law, and immigration and civil rights law, among others. The Law School houses over twenty live-client clinics, a robust business, law, and technology program, and an award-winning trial advocacy program. The Director is also a member of the faculty and is expected to teach in the first-year legal research program with the possibility of teaching other courses depending on the candidate’s interests and the needs of the Law School. The Director will be appointed as tenured, tenure-track, or clinical faculty, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Requirements
Experience/Qualifications:
A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.I.S. from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent qualifications) are required.
Minimum of five years of increasing professional responsibility in a research law library setting, or other equivalent experience.
Experience directing, supervising, and motivating others.
Aptitude for and orientation towards collaborative leadership.
Clear vision for and understanding of the law library’s role in legal education.
Knowledge of and passion for technological innovations in the world of legal information, education, and practice.
Administrative and management experience including library/information collection management, development, and budgeting.
Experience teaching legal research.
Excellent communication, project management, and planning skills.
Commitment to furthering the library’s culture as a welcoming and supportive environment for a diverse student body, staff, and faculty.
Knowledge of and experience with student and faculty services.
Strong service ethic.
