Microsoft has an immediate opportunity for an experienced commercial attorney to join its Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) Legal and Corporate Affairs team based in Singapore as Director of Legal Affairs. The APJ team is part of Microsoft?s global Legal & Corporate Affairs Department and supports the company?s subsidiaries in the region. The team also supports regional business headquarter activities and provides legal advice on local and regional issues to colleagues and clients in the United States.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Legal Affairs will manage two other attorneys based at our regional headquarters in Singapore and work closely with other Microsoft lawyers and business clients at the subsidiary and regional levels. Primary functions for the Director of Legal Affairs will include:

Serving as a principal point of contact on commercial legal issues for regional business leaders representing Microsoft?s sales, marketing, and services organizations.
Serving as a principal point of contact in APJ on commercial legal issues for members of Microsoft?s commercial legal team based at the company?s US headquarters and in other regions outside of APJ.
Supporting commercial lawyers within APJ, including by: providing strategic guidance to maximize the effectiveness of legal support on commercial matters; managing the regional rollout of programmatic offerings driven by the worldwide commercial legal community; fostering communication, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices amongst commercial attorneys in subsidiaries across the region; providing substantive support and assistance on major commercial transactions.
Managing a small but experienced team of attorneys based in Singapore.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Analyzing legal risks and resolving legal issues to improve overall business strategy and implementation;
Working with business clients and LCA colleagues on programmatic agreements that involve varying degrees of localization as part of Microsoft?s worldwide and local offerings;
Working with business clients to structure and prepare commercial agreements and to advise generally on the legal aspects of manufacturing, sales and distribution processes;
Training internal business clients and LCA personnel on a wide range of legal issues;
Establishing strong and positive relationships with management teams including business segments and regional licensing teams;
Participating with business clients in strategic planning and pipeline reviews;
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements and providing legal advice in relation to a broad range of matters, including issues regarding intellectual property, competition law, marketing, compliance, and regulatory matters.
Coordinating work with outside counsel and overseeing the efficient use of budget allocated to outside counsel fees;
Providing supportive cross-group leadership within the LCA team and more broadly amongst business groups.
The scope of the role may change over time to respond to business adjustments and reorganizations, and it is a requirement that the successful candidate be flexible and adaptable in terms of his/her general skill sets and aspirations.

Qualifications:

- Excellent academic qualifications, including a Juris Doctor and/or a Bachelor of Laws or higher degree in law
- A license to practice law in one or more jurisdictions and at least fifteen years PQE as a commercial lawyer
- A proven track record in proactively and intuitively establishing, building, maintaining and managing strong and positive relationships with clients and colleagues
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and drafting skills
- The ability to work well independently, balanced with a strong ability to contribute effectively in a team environment
- The ability to lead and motivate others and to facilitate problem solving; work across cultures; and communicate effectively across a large number of diverse internal groups, teams and divisions
- The ability to work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-dimensional projects in a fast-paced environment and across inter-departmental teams
- Sound and practical business judgment
- Familiarity with laws relating to copyright, trademark, trade secrets, antitrust, marketing and communications, advertising, and consumer protection
- Strong goal orientation with a focus on delivering results
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English (additional language skills are a plus)
- An awareness of and ability to apply principles of plain language and contract simplification
- A problem-solving approach focused on achieving results that benefit Microsoft?s business as well as the business of Microsoft?s customers and partners
- Experience with computer software development, manufacturing, distribution and sales issues is highly desirable
- Is highly proactive with strong relationship building skills; and have
