Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School has filed a federal lawsuit over the American Bar Association’s release of a letter that said it failed to comply with all ABA standards.
Michigan live reports…
The law school sought a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against release of the Nov. 13 letter after an ABA committee concluded that the law school was not in compliance with a rule that required admitting only “applicants who ‘appear capable’ of satisfactorily completing its program of legal instruction … .”
The ABA Journal posted the letter on its website on Nov. 16, two days after WMU-Cooley filed its lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

The letter, sent to President and Dean Don LeDuc, said that a request for a major change in the program would be deferred until it “demonstrates it is in full compliance with each of the Standards,” Barry Currier, managing director of Accreditation and Legal Education, wrote.
The affiliation between WMU and Cooley began in 2014.
