Rumours of the departure in the coming year of CEO Don Van Meer and at least two of his executives at Carswell have been confirmed. Van Meer was a phenomenally successful corporate politician who survived despite collapsing subscriptions, falling revenues, and mediocre performance, by mastering the art of “corporate speak” and “controlling the message”. At this he had few equals. Thomson Reuters Australia reported to him as well as the Canadian business. Will his departure signal a new era of genuine customer sensitivity? Or will motherhood and apple pie continue to cloak shortsightedness and shameless price increases? Probably the latter, but one can hope.
