Bail-Out Bankers Back in New York Clubs
New York investment bankers are spending thousands of dollars on nightclub bottle service again the New York Times reported this week, with one attributing the renewed excess to ‘the government giving us US $10billion.’
The paper described hordes of financiers ordering US$2,500 jeroboams of Veuve Clicquot at Saturday brunch hangouts Bagatelle and Merkato 55, as DJs interrupted their sets to spin the theme from Superman.
Manhattan clubbing expert Steven Lewis (who first wrote about the trend on clubbing portal Blackbook.com) was distinctly unimpressed.
“The country has been in an uproar about the bonuses paid to A.I.G. executives with an angry president ordering his minions to make it stop,” Lewis noted in his latest column.
“I can’t imagine the reaction when it’s taken to the next level—when people realize that the loot is trickling down to the frat boys once
again and is being used to buy tables at the city’s trendiest nightclubs,” he added.
Pacha New York chief Eddie Dean chatted to Skruff about the impact of the recession in February, revealing that the many of the club’s ‘hedge fund VIP’ regulars were then scaling back.
“Bottle service certainly isn’t what it used to be,” said Eddie, “A good client would come in every week whereas nowadays you might see them twice a month. Others will still come but might not hire a table.”
