The opportunity

Part of the Bloomsbury Publishing Group, Bloomsbury Professional specialises in UK and Ireland Law, Tax and Accounting. We publish high quality books, journals and digital products for lawyers, tax practitioners, accountants and business professionals.

This is a rare opportunity for a creative and highly organised individual to join the publishing team at Commissioning Editor level.  Reporting to the Head of Practitioner Publishing (Law and Hart), the role will see you commission and manage a wide range of UK legal titles across different formats utilising commissioning and project-management skills in an exciting role where you will work on products and services, from initial idea to contract to delivery to publication/launch. The job requires liaison with authors and in-house colleagues in sales, production and marketing.

Working closely with the colleagues across Bloomsbury, this is a brilliant and very rare opportunity for an ambitious and talented commissioning editor with an interest in law.

The role

  • Taking overall commercial responsibility for the products and online services you manage.
  • Managing the life-cycle of new products and online services, within the lists you are responsible for, from idea to maturity.
  • Leading backlist management, within the lists you are responsible for, to ensure the commercial growth and continuation of a strong back list across different formats
  • Liaising with authors, contributors and other stakeholders, external and internal, to ensure the successful commercial development of the lists you are responsible for
  • Liaising with in-house teams to ensure all colleagues are informed of developments in relation to the lists you are responsible for
  • Input into the annual budget for the lists you are responsible for
  • Representing BP at external events, meetings and industry gatherings
  • To ensure that your products and online services are produced to the highest possible standard whilst delivering best value

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • A good knowledge of the UK legal regime including understanding the key players and organisations
  • Experience of book commissioning in professional markets
  • Experience of online product development and product management
  • Experience of author management including contract negotiation
  • Self-motivated but collaborative and able to motivate
  • Able to prioritise, meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Detail oriented but can maintain practical overview
  • Ability to balance and prioritise multiple responsibilities and effectively manage projects
  • Commercially focused

The role is a full-time 12-month maternity cover

The role is a hybrid-working pattern of 2 days office based in our Oxford office/3 day’s home based.  Allocated office days for this role are Wednesday and Thursday
