Job Description
Stanford Law School’s Robert Crown Law Library seeks a collaborative and creative Collection Development Librarian to join the team. The Collection Development Librarian manages stewardship of the collection, identifies historic gaps and areas for strategic growth, and explores non-custodial partnerships. Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Technical Services, the position coordinates collection development activities including overseeing the drafting and updating of the collection development policy, leading efforts to promote the diversification of research and collections, and organizing the selection of materials in all formats and from all jurisdictions. This position also assumes a leadership role in cooperative collection development efforts.
The Collection Develop Librarian will:
Actively participate in developing library policies, as well as facilitating collaboration between the Law Library and Stanford University Libraries with regard to collection development
Serve on library committees and stay current with developments at all Stanford University libraries
Collaborate with other library teams to interpret collections through exhibitions, publications and programming
Create associations with lending libraries, archives, publishers, and vendors
Review, maintain, and recommend development of new consortial partnerships or revisions to existing ones
This position also plays a critical role in connecting library patrons to collections. The Collection Development Librarian:
Supports faculty, students, and researchers seeking historical and archival legal materials, located both at Stanford and elsewhere
In conjunction with the Access Services team, coordinates interlibrary loan and document delivery services of unique materials, archival collections, and historical materials for library patrons
In conjunction with the Reference team, assists faculty, students, and researchers to make effective use of the Stanford library collections, particularly historical and archival legal materials
Forges strong relationships with faculty to encourage the use of library collections for teaching and research
May provide legal research instruction in law school classes and other settings, according to need, candidate credentials, and candidate interest
Represents the Robert Crown Law Library at professional conferences and stays informed about changes and trends in the field
Supervise a librarian specialist
Engages in other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.
J.D. or advanced degree in a humanities discipline with demonstrated knowledge of legal literature
Experience researching legal materials in multiple formats
Experience providing outstanding research service
Experience or demonstrated interest in working with digital collections and understanding of digital humanities methodologies
Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in building, maintaining, and delivering library collections and services
Strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment; excellent organizational, time-management, and analytical skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other library departments and campus communities
Strong project management skills
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent degree
Experience working with historical or legal archival collections, including selection, analysis, and assessment
Familiarity with collection analysis tools and metrics
Engagement with emerging technologies and trends in digital humanities
Experience working on library or archival digitization projects
Demonstrated understanding of intellectual property, copyright, and privacy issues as they relate to library collections
Experience supervising staff
Evidence of successful budget management experience
Experience negotiating licensing agreements with information product vendors
Working knowledge of a foreign language
Working Conditions
May work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
