The Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) has strictly and swiftly prosecuted extreme crimes, expediting cases like the car-ramming in South China’s Zhuhai and the knife attack in East China’s Jiangsu Province over the past year. By supervising and guiding key cases, it has deterred crime and addressed public concerns, the chief of the SPP’s major crime department said on Tuesday.
Previously, a total of 35 people were killed and another 43 were injured after a car driven by Fan Weiqiu rammed into crowds in a sports center in the city of Zhuhai in South China’s Guangdong Province on November 11, 2024. The Intermediate People’s Court of Zhuhai carried out the execution of Fan on January 20, 2025, in accordance with the execution order issued by the Supreme People’s Court, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Xu Jiajin, the criminal convicted of killing eight people and injuring 17 in a knife attack at a vocational school in Jiangsu Province, was executed on January 20, 2025, according to a court statement. The attack took place at around 6:30 pm, November 16, 2024, at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology. Xu was caught at the scene and confessed to his crime, according to a police statement at the time, Xinhua reported.
Efforts should be made to improve the case summary and similar case analysis mechanisms, conducting retrospective analyses of multiple major malignant criminal cases in recent years, digging deep into the underlying causes, researching prevention and control measures, and actively participating in social governance work.
SPP’s major crime department has actively participated in the special campaign against gun-related and explosive-related crimes, conducting analysis and assessment of cases handled by procuratorial organs involving such offenses, said Yuan Ming, chief of the SPP’s major crime department, noting they will continue to take a strong approach in combating drug-related offenses.
Additionally, SPP has supervised and handled a series of major and sensitive cases, including the fire accident at a school in Fangcheng county, Central China’s Henan Province, ensuring that cases are handled in accordance with the law and in a prudent manner.
In this case, thirteen students were killed and another one was injured in a fire that took place in a school dormitory in Fangcheng county, in the city of Nanyang, on January 17, according to local authorities, Xinhua reported.
SPP has also carried out in-depth supervision of case filings in the field of production safety, focusing on addressing issues such as underreporting or misreporting of fatalities in safety incidents, failure to transfer cases for prosecution, failure to file cases, and substituting administrative penalties for criminal accountability.
From January to November 2024, procuratorial agencies across the country approved the arrest of 669,000 criminal suspects and took over 1.46 million individuals to court.
